THE FIRM and its MISSION STATEMENT

Aside from clerical assistance, I am the firm. If you hire my law firm it will be handled from start to finish by me alone, and when you have questions during my representation they will by answered promptly by me alone in a way that is completely understandable to you. Facing criminal charges presents serious potential consequences, many of which may have a lifelong negative impact. For this reason, no junior lawyers, paralegals, or secretaries will handle any aspect of your case nor will such employees be assigned to answer any of  your questions—that’s my job; and it’s extremely important to me that each of my clients clearly understands what is happening, AND what will happen, in their cases. If at any time during my representation you have any questions or are in any way unsure what is happening I insist that you let me know that IMMEDIATELY.

I’m an experienced criminal defense attorney and there are usually a variety of things I can do to lessen or eliminate the negative consequences of an arrest, but I am not a magician; I do not magically cause criminal charges to disappear. Honesty is my number one policy in all aspects of my life, and I will accordingly explain the bad along with the good. Controlling the actions or decisions of other people, be they police officers, prosecutors, or judges is beyond my abilities; I can and will do everything in my power to persuade and encourage favorable action by others, but I cannot and will not guarantee what anyone else involved in your case will do. Because it’s the only thing I can honestly do, I make this simple promise: if you choose to hire me and you are accepted as a client I will use all of my skills and experience to produce the most favorable outcome possible.

THE ATTORNEY

My confidence in my ability to help you is a product of over 30 years of experience as a licensed attorney in Pennsylvania. A 1978 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, I have been engaged almost exclusively in criminal practice for the last 26 years. Between 1984 and 1990 I was employed by District Attorney Robert Colville as an Assistant District Attorney assigned at various times to the narcotics, robbery and homicide units. Near the end of 1990 I was hired by then Attorney General Ernest D. Preate as a Deputy Attorney General in the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General assigned to the Drug Strike Force Legal Services Section as the Regional Attorney in Region V, Greensburg, Pennsylvania. In that position until 1996, I provided legal supervision to narcotics agents in the Attorney General’s Office, Pennsylvania State Troopers assigned to the region for narcotics investigations as well as many local police officers serving in drug task forces organized and supervised by the Attorney General’s Office. Those many years in law enforcement enabled me an opportunity to understand from the inside how not only the criminal justice system functions by how law enforcement officers do, and sometimes fail to do, their jobs. That experience helps me help my clients on a daily basis.

By 1996, I realized it was time to move on. I entered private practice ad have have devoted nearly all of my professional career since then defending people charged with criminal offenses. A couple of important areas are not included among my services. Although I am admitted to practice in the federal courts in the Western District of Pennsylvania and have appeared in the Eastern District of Ohio, defense in federal courts has never been a significant part of my practice. Experience, regular day-in-day-out experience is in my mind essential for effective representation so I typically refer any cases involving federal prosecutions to one of a few attorneys I know professionally who share my philosophy in the representation of criminal defendants. If you have arrived at this website with such a case, please do not hesitate to contact me for my suggestions about solid legal representation. Similarly, if the charges involve violence against women or children, especially sexual violence, I do not accept such cases. My explanation is simple: because I cannot be absolutely certain that such a case would receive my honest best efforts, I decline such representation. Once again, I would be happy to make a referral to highly competent legal counsel.
